The Strength Deployment Inventory
The Strength Deployment Inventory ® (SDI ®) is a tool that can help businesses improve ineffective communication and manage conflicts, disagreements and people who just don’t seem to get on.
What is SDI?
A versatile, paper-based training and consulting tool based on Relationship Awareness Theory ®. It is designed to give delegates insights into their and others strengths and motivations and some clues to creating more rewarding relationships.
It's a self development tool that gives us an indication of what really makes us tick and why we do the things we do. It looks at our motivations when things are going well and when faced with conflict & opposition and how these drive our behaviours. By relating to others in ways that respect their motivations you increase the chances of rewarding relationships and decrease the chance of triggering conflict in others.

Why Use SDI?
The SDI is NOT just another "personality test."
There are many self-awareness tools in the marketplace that look at behaviour at one point in time and use it as a prediction of future behaviour. SDI is different as it looks at what motivates a person and how this typically drives their behaviour. It also looks how a persons priorities change when faced with conflict or opposition.
It’s Accurate, Easy to Understand and Memorable
It is an easy to understand and very accurate self-scoring behavioural awareness assessment tool. It quickly provides a common language with which to explore and understand in a none threatening manner the various working relationships we encounter. It creates a language that cuts through cultural and hierarchical barriers.
Based on more than 30 years of research
The SDI is based on more than 30 years of research by psychologist Elias H Porter into self –concept from which he developed his Relationship Awareness Theory™. Although many personality theories are about people, this theory was designed for people.
How it works
By completing the 20 questioned Strength Deployment Inventory participants will gain insightful into their motivational values and behaviours when they feel good about themselves and when faced with conflict or opposition.
Participants will realise that some people want to get things done quickly and efficiently. But that other people feel that getting the job done right takes thoughtfulness and planning — not speed. Still others tend to be more concerned about the people aspects and the feelings of the people involved. They will discover that as different as these approaches are, all of them are valuable.
Participants will learn that recognising what “motivational language” someone is speaking can greatly enhance their ability to communicate more effectively AND handle conflict more productively. It becomes easier to “relate” to a person’s actions when one understands what drives them from within.
The following gives you a brief outline of the four main key Motivational Values Systems revealed by the questionnaire;

Altruistic-Nurturing (blue) The protection, growth and welfare of others. Looking for opportunities to support those who may need help.

Assertive-Directing (red) Task accomplishment, organisation of people, time and money plus any other resources … to win out against opposition and be seen as an achiever.
- Analytical-Autonomising (green) The assurance that things have been properly thought out, self-dependence, taking time to get things ‘right’, looking for ways to improve quality.
- Flexible-Cohering ( h u b) Flexibility, the welfare of the group and for belonging in the group. Keeping options open, consensus and harmony within groups.
- Assertive-Nurturing ( red- blue) The protection, growth and welfare of others through task accomplishment and leadership. Enthusiasm for the development of others.
- Judicious-Competing ( red- green) Intelligent assertiveness, justice, order and fairness in competition. Strategic thinking where all resources are used to achieve goals.
- Cautious-Supporting ( blue- green) Affirming and developing self-sufficiency in self and others. Concern for thoughtful helpfulness with regard to justice.
Applications
Any organisation where individuals must work together towards shared goals will find value and flexibility in the SDI. Different SDI Editions and Tools
Portraits of Personal Strengths ®. The SDI is different to other behavioural inventories, as whilst it tells us what our core motivations are which typically drive our behaviour, it also acknowledges that we often will behave in different ways. Whilst the MVS (Colour type) provides the ‘reason why’, the Portrait of Personal Strengths shows us the behaviours that we choose to achieve given goals in different situations.
Portraits of Overdone Strengths ®. Overdone Strengths are behaviours which are intended as strengths but are not valued by others. Intention and outcome are often very different. By knowing what we are likely to overdo reduces the chances of triggering conflict in others.
Expectations Editions ®. What we expect of each other and what job role expects of us are often unwritten rules that govern how we work together. Most often these are not talked about because it appears ‘obvious’. Things that are ‘obvious’ or ‘common sense’ are not as obvious or as common as most people might imagine. When measuring satisfaction within a job position, team or relationship, understanding the expectations that all of the stakeholders bring to the situation are often not examined. This edition provides an objective forum to get everyone's expectations into the open so that they can be compared and discussed in a non-threatening and non-judgmental way.
Feedback Editions ®. Feedback is a vital component to building effective relationships. The SDI feedback tools build a commitment to seeking and receiving feedback as a positive means to enhance relationships. These materials offer a very different approach by focusing on perceptions of behaviour rather than skills or competencies. The SDI Feedback Edition ® can be used for both one-to-one and 360 degree feedback to create conversations about potential amendments to behaviour. The Feedback Portrait of Personal Strengths and Overdone Strengths reveals how others perceive a participants strengths and gives feedback in a non-confrontational way.
